Are you familiar with the concept of HIIT, or high-intensity interval training? As a certified EOS Implemente®, it recently struck me how closely a HIIT workout mirrors the effectiveness of a stellar Level 10 Meeting. Both have this uncanny ability to maximize outcomes in minimal time. Just as HIIT packs the punch of a lengthy gym session into a short workout, Level 10 Meetings condense the advantages of extended, often unproductive meetings into a compact, results-driven meeting. And they’re much more effective than handling problems sporadically throughout the week.

THE WARM UP

Great Level 10 Meetings start with a positive focus. Team members check in with their personal and business best from the past week. This gets the flow of the meeting started and some good brain chemistry happening.

SHORT, INTENSE BURSTS

In a HIIT routine, after the warm-up, we increase our intensity in short bursts. This is similar to the initial reporting phase of a Level 10 Meeting where we quickly review our Scorecard, Rocks, and Customer and Employee Headlines. These 5-minute rapid-fire sessions get us ready to discover and tackle issues head-on, much like those initial bursts prepare our bodies for peak performance.

To really benefit from a HIIT workout, you’ve got to give it your all and maintain a high intensity. As your heart pounds, you’re immersed in the strenuous but rewarding work of pushing your limits. After pushing hard, you get a quick break before jumping back in. This will happen several times during your workout.

Similarly, a Level 10 Meeting thrives on these high-intensity moments of concentrated teamwork, where we bravely tackle issues together. Just like a HIIT workout, a Level 10 Meeting calls for a strong heart and the courage to put the real issues out on the table. And we have to trust in our united strength to deliberate and creatively solve problems. It calls for everyone to actively listen, think critically, and be open to innovative solutions.

REPEAT IT

Much like a vigorous HIIT session, the Identify, Discuss, and Solve (IDS™) phase of a Level 10 Meeting is demanding. We give it our all in the pursuit of answers. Then as we outline our action items, there’s a brief pause in the intensity – but not for long. Suddenly, it’s time to repeat the process and tackle the next challenge with the same intensity. In one Level 10 Meeting, it’s possible to resolve six to eight core issues.

COOL DOWN

Just as a HIIT workout ends with a cooldown to stretch and lower your heart rate, so does a Level 10 Meeting. We cool down by recapping the action items that were assigned to help resolve the present issues.

We reflect on decisions that need to be shared with the rest of the team and give the meeting a rating from 1-10. Just like finishing a HIIT workout, a Level 10 Meeting leaves the team poised and better prepared to tackle the week ahead.
